Welcome
The Beaufort County Committee of 100 (BCC 100) met in
the Wilkinson center in Belhaven, NC at 6:00 P.M. for
a Dinner Meeting. Chairman Scott Shepherd and Mr. Tom
Thompson, Executive Director of the Beaufort County Economic
Development Commission (BCEDC) welcomed the group of 110
to Belhaven for their meeting. Those representing Belhaven
Administration were: Dr. Charles O. Boyette, Mayor; Council
members George R. Ebron, Jr., Mayor Pro-Tern; Cynthia
M. Heath and Linda Wilkerson. Town Clerk Marie J. Adams
was also present.
The blessing was given and the meal enjoyed.
Power Point Presentation
Wilkinson Center - Ms. Starlon Credle
Mr. Thompson introduced Ms. Credle who gave background
information on the formation of "Friends of JAW"and
the present use of the building and the building's availability
for rent.
Beaufort County Community College
Mr. David Crosby, representing Beaufort-County Community
College (BCCC) informed the group of ongoing classes in
the community including Nurse's Aid Classes held in the
Wilkinson Center with scheduled computer programs this
summer, also in the Wilkinson Center.
Belhaven Waterfront Plan
Mayor Boyette gave background information concerning the
town's Waterfront Study Plan by stating that the plan
was financed with $25,000 from the Town and $25,000 from
the BCEDC; he highlighted the Waterfront Study Plan by
showing the condominiums, marinas bike/walk paths, etc.
and gave detailed information with the power point presentation
and stated that the Town of Belhaven owned g piece of
property on the waterfront at the end of Pamlico Street
(known as the Belhaven Fish&Oyster property) that
would be a focal starting point of the plan;
Mayor Boyette stated that the town's infrastructure was
ready for development as the Sewer Treatment Plant's capacity
had been increased, a new state-of-the-art reverse osmosis
Water Treatment Plant was near completion and the electric
system had been upgraded from a 4,160 kv system to a 12,500
kv system including new substation, lines, poles, etc.
Mayor Boyette informed the group that the town had a safe
harbor in Pantego Creek and that contacts are being made
to push forward replacing the damaged breakwater with
rock.
Mr. Thompson stated that the Waterfront Plan for Belhaven
would come to fruition as he has developers interested
in the properties already. Mr. Thompson stated that all
property owners involved were also very cooperative with
the proposed development.
Pungo District Hospital Update
Mr. Ken Ragland, Chief Executive Officer, Pungo District
Hospital (PDH) stated that the hospital was
a 501@3 not for profit which opened in July 1953 with
130 full-time employees with a $4,500,000 annual payroll.
Mr. Ragland stated that PDH had services as larger hospitals
including acute intensive care, and one of four ventilators
in the state. Mr. Ragland stated that the outlook for
PDH was good as the hospital was progressing financially
but warned that there would continue to ups and downs
financially as government changes payment/insurance practices
make
changes. Mr. Ragland boosted that PDH had five doctors
and was ready to serve the community and areas surrounding.
Bath
Tricentennial - 1705
Mayor Barbara Modlin spoke briefly informing the groups
of year long plans for the Bath TriCentennial. Mayor Modlin
stated that Bath was the oldest town in NC, with the oldest
church, library, house, etc. Some of the events plan include
the docking of Elizabeth II, an outdoor drama and Blackbeard's
Ball.
Future
Beaufort County Projects
Mr. Thompson spoke of several developmental projects within
the county.
